Future Gate has kicked off at Kino Art in Brno. On Monday, director and screenwriter Nicholas Meyer introduced Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan before the screening, and audiences also had their first chance to enjoy the sold-out student film competition.

On Tuesday, the programme features the already sold-out Japanese sci-fi comedy You Are the Film, followed by the stunning stop-motion animation Junk World, which was awarded Best Film in the main competition by the festival jury over the weekend.

Wednesday has something in store for fans of both independent filmmaking and big-budget blockbusters. The African film Crocodile, which premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, shows how to make sci-fi with virtually no budget or resources, but with plenty of passion and determination to tell a story. Colony delivers a proper zombie thrill ride from Sang-ho Yeon, director of the cult classic Train to Busan. This time, he takes the zombie genre into a new dimension — and it is just as bloody. And, of course, there is Arrival, one of the most intimate and imaginative sci-fi films of the past decade. Wednesday’s programme will also feature the short documentary Panspermia by our favourite filmmaker John D. Boswell.
