This year’s showcase of student films was truly impressive and the submitted films pleased not only the jury, but also the visitors to the festival in Prague. The jury selected the three best films and announced one honorable mention. Below you will also find the statement of the jury.
Winner
Keep Out / director Tan Lui Chan / Západočeská univerzita v Plzni
We should be concerned about this film because it accurately, concisely, and with subtle sarcasm and bluntness, describes many of the flaws, failures, and vices of modern humanity, which is heading toward disaster. But throughout, the talented author gives us hope that it might end well… At least for the few of us who can break free from the matrix.
2nd place
Stay Home Stay Safe / director Martin Bystrianský / Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně
The jury awarded the second place in the student film competition to a film that sovereignly grasped the theme of escaping from reality into the (supposed) safety of virtual life in isolation. The film stands out for its stylistic sophistication, quality acting and ambivalent final message allowing for different interpretations.
3rd place
Doomed to Placehold / director Matěj Martinec / FAMU
Mixing the visual language of silent comedy with eloquent computer imagery, the winner of the 3rd place is a gloriously gloomy portrait of existential mediocrity in the face of online ideals. What stood out to the judges was the innovative use of colour, mood and form to evoke currents of hope and despair.
special mention
Collision / director Štěpánka Mikulíková / Univerzita Tomáše Bati ve Zlíně
A playful and biting take on the theme of environmental grief. A well-aimed slap at humanity. And perfect timing of gags that both entertain and chill.
You can see a screening of student films at Kino Art on October 8.
Many thanks to the partners of the student competition: the company Canon and the filming equipment rental company Biofilms. The partners gave valuable gifts to the winners. Thank you
